Very nice question & a reminder of an often neglected relationship. But off course, yes!

Some people who happen to be illiterate but financially capable to own a PC, laptop, a smart-phone or a tablet, can still intuitively use certain IMAGE-BASED social networks (with the help of children for instance) like Pinterest or Instagram or even social gaming networks, where their illiteracy would be less of a barrier.

But social network is mainly about written content and understanding the features of social media. If you can't read or write, accessing this world would be closer to a self-created taboo. Besides, illiterate users are not likely to be the target-group of advertising on such platforms, unless...

Wouldn't it be a great next-big-idea to create a voice-based social network, where functions are transformed into voice upon hovering, actions are based on voice-command and text-content is converted into speech? After all, the technology is there!

Yes, there is a direct linkage. In global world, literate people are well aware of the importance of social media and are using it effectively for marketing and sales promotion which results in the development of their business along with global expansion.

Hi Irphan, Good evening. In my opinion, due to advance technology, today's literate populations are directly linked and involved in heavy usage of social networking tool. Prudently targeting such networks for marketing and sales promotion will help to increase sells.

the origin of positive population literacy is a healthy economic environment in that area. usage of social networking comes as a product of that environment, proving the presence of an evolved and involved population, highly attentive to any marketing promotions, so i would answer affirmative.

I do not think so. Global literacy is as it is. The usage of social networking tools  for marketing / sales has neither increased it nor decreased it. As far as I know, the global literacy is still below30 per cent. And there is no chance of it being much higher in the near future.
