Yes, working in a standard bank under western banking rules and regulations is most likely haram and might pose a problem for a Muslim seeking to fulfill Allah's Rights over him, in that most banking jobs would be related in some way to making money through what is known as "usury" or "rebah" in Arabic. This is strickly forbidden in the Quran and according to Islamic Law it is something to be avoided at all costs.

The problem is for many of us living today, we can hardly avoid coming into contact with this type of banking. All of us have to put our money somewhere and certainly we would have to agree that keeping money in a sock or a money belt can at times be quite inconvenient, not to mention dangerous.

The situation of a person working in a bank and earning their living from it is also very bad for a Muslim and they should be looking for something better for them as soon as possible. It might mean taking a pay cut to some extent, yet that would be better in the eyes of Islam than to continue to earn money from haram (forbidden) sources.

We recommend you to contact your local imam or scholary and then discuss in detail your situation and ask them to help you come to a better situation for the sake of Allah, inshallah.

Allah is the All-Knower and we ask Him to guide all of us to the good of this life and the good of the Next Life, ameen.

Yes, accordingly to Islami Scholars it is prohibited in Islam due to presence of the element of Riba (Interest).

The best solution for this is to try and join an Islami Bank or atleast Islamic Banking division of a commercial bank. I think this is the best way to work in a bank without violating the practices of Islam.

Yes my sis , work in riba-based banks is haram , haram

The Holy Quran and the Sunnah warned against of dealing with these banks because of  Riba .

Start from this moment

The "MULLAHS" said that Bank is HARAM, but when the same Banks offered MONEY to these "MULLAHs", then these "MULLAHs" made "ISLAMIC BANKING", it means all others should be termed as "NON-ISLAMIC BANKING", now think about a joke that every "NON-ISLAMIC BANKING" have given BIRTH to their ISLAMIC BANKING CHILD, HAHAHA, SON of HARAM PARENTS but itself it is HALAL.

My Dear, you are wearing HIJAB, means you know what is right and wrong, you are getting money against your professional services, and you should maintain your dignity.

As far as your question is, There is no concept of BANKING in Islam, Islam gives a totally localized and decentralized monetary system, where wealth is termed as Snakes, nobody is encouraged to keep wealth stored unused, and yes there are several ways of utilization of wealth through partnerships, but no concept of bank is appreciated.

This is a detailed topic and you must have to study it thoroughly, You can study the model of business of HAZRAT USMAN GHANI RADI-ALLAH-U TA'ALA ANHU, who always have several CAMELS loaded with Inventory on the way to or from MAKKAH / MADINA, but every second night he has no single grain seed at his home to eat.

But if you will follow these "MULLAHs" they will take you on the path where they can bargain over you.

There are Islamic banks that operate according to Shariah. They work according to the principle of "Murabaha" or profit-sharing. These banks are part of the banking sector. So a muslim can work for a Shariah-governed bank. Yes, Islam is against usury and banks not working according to Shariah or principles of Islam. Yet, Islam is not against the idea of banking according to Shariah.

Dear Sara,

First of all we must agree that there is nothing haram only what is stated in Qur'an, following your questions; It depends. If the bank doesn't deal with Riba (interest), it is absolutely permissible for anyone to work there.

However, it is not permissible (according to majority of the sunni scholars) for a Muslim to work in a bank that deals with Riba, even if the job that they are appointed to do is not related to the Riba-based dealings. This is because they would be assisting those who work with Riba and cooperating with them.

And God knows best.
