In a fairminded society we shouldn't have to ask this question, equal treatment and opportunity for all should be the "norm" and upholding that should come naturally indeed it should be second nature to us. However, as we know, society isn't always fair and it is down to us as individuals  to do our best to ensure that EVERYONE is treated equally and justly, whether it be in the classroom, the workplace or any other part of society. Denis has given a good answer which is more pertinent to the classroom.
