Target Setting is a very important aspect of the learning process, but it must be approached in the correct manner in order for the student to gain the benefits. If the process does not include the child and encourage them to seek success in a positive manner, then the idea of target setting will not improve a student's performance.
Students should be involved in revewing their performances and be an integral part of the goal setting (or Target setting) process. All students can achieve when they are given clear expectations. This is an important aspect to take into consideration when setting goals. It is especially important to take into careful consideration when setting goals with intervention students.
I believe that teachers should express their high expectations and encourage the students to reach goals that may seem out of reach at first. My favorite quote that I use to inspire students when goal setting is "If you dream it you can achieve it" and "Shoot for the stars, if you don't make it, you may still reach the moon."
I think the most important aspect of goal setting is just to encourage the student. Always encourage the student by discussing his or her strengths first and then gently discuss their weaknesses and areas for improvement.
If a student knows you care and believe in them, then the sky is the limit!
