Hi,Excel Rank functions calculates rank of number in a specified list ,either in ascending or descending order.if you were sort the list the rank of the number would be it'S Position .Rank( number, ref, order) Number= whose rank you want to find. Ref=is an array of ,or a ref to,a list of numbers. Order=is a number specifying how to rank number.:)
Returns the rank of a number in a list of numbers. The rank of a number is its size relative to other values in a list. (If you were to sort the list, the rank of the number would be its position.)
Formula RANK(number,ref,[order])
The RANK function syntax has the following arguments:
1) Number: Required. The number whose rank you want to find.
2) Ref: Required. An array of, or a reference to, a list of numbers. Nonnumeric values in ref are ignored.
3 ) Order: Optional. A number specifying how to rank number.
If order is0 (zero) or omitted, Microsoft Excel ranks number as if ref were a list sorted in descending order.
If order is any non zero value, Microsoft Excel ranks number as if ref were a list sorted in ascending order.
RANK function returns the rank of a number within a set of numbers.
RANK( number, array, [order] )
number is the number to find the rank for.
array is a range or array of numbers to use for ranking purposes.
order is optional. It specifies how to rank the numbers.
If order is0, it ranks numbers in descending order. If order is not0, it ranks numbers in ascending order.
If the order parameter is omitted, the RANK function assumes order is0 (descending order).
RANK function is used to compare numbers to other numbers in the same list.
Ms. Shazia Abbasi..explained well. I endorse the answer given by her. Other colleges also explained the concept well.
This function calculates the position of a value in a list relative to the other values in the list.
=RANK(NumberToRank,ListOfNumbers,RankOrder)
The RankOrder can be0 zero or1.
Using0 will rank larger numbers at the top. (This is optional, leaving it out has the same effect).
Using1 will rank small numbers at the top.
I agree with the gentle ladies and gentlemen concerning their answers.
the RANK function returns the rank of a particular number in a list of numbers adding sorting orders.
the RANK function false under the statistical category of function which made it to carry the3 arguments in its paste function palette:
RANK = the number in which we are looking for it rank or position,
REF: = stands for the list or arrays of numbers in which that number(RANK) is involve'
Order: = It is for sorting ascending or decending (0-9 / A-Z) OR (9-0 / Z-A);
When computing this RANK function the Order can be ignore.
Note: When using the cross hair to fill ranks of other values in the same list make the REF. tab Absolute (meaning cell references with added dollar signs) so that the RANK function should point back to the same REF to determine the next entry, if not welcome repetations of results.
Hope it help
I ENDORSE ANSWER OF Ms. Shazia Abbasi
For a data set where the values are not arranged in numeric order, Rank helps to tell the position that value can have if arranged in order.
The principle is used in academic institute to find the position. the data there is as per roll number issued. here rank provide the position on the basis of number scored.
there are three inputs in excel for Rank
1. Number: the specific cell value whose rank is required
2. Ref: The whole Data set column/row contain the all specific values from which rank is required.
3. Order: Ascending or descending
The rank function to compare the number with another number so
a-- The Number: Required. The number whose rank you want to find.
b-- The Reference : Required. An array of, or a reference to, a list of numbers. Nonnumeric values in referance are ignored.
c-- And the Order: Optional. A number specifying how to rank number.
