Retaining the old client is not difficult, because he will come again because of your performance, but he will also inform his friends and other related person about your performance, there are several ways to get new client, but referred by old clients should be the main source, so that your reputation will be build in market and most of the people will know about your performance. So, in my view, your performance is the main thing to get new client and to retain old one.

Both are equal efforts in the beginning period. The real benefit derive from retaining the existing customers, who may start promoting business for us and the entry of new customers/clents.

Both the aspects are equally important. Just like the2 faces of a coin.

If a company focusses entirely on making new clients and would not be able to retain them then making new relations wont matter and efforts will go down the drain. In the long run this policy may not be fruitful to one's expectations.

On the other hand, if a company entirely focuses on retaining old client and doesn't pay attention on making new clients, the business won't expand at a flourishing rate (although it may give a little benefit because of the old retaining clients introducing their references to the company). But growth will definitely go very slow.

For a healthy and sound growth, the old clients are equally important as the new ones.
