For ISO9001, it is to ensure quality product/service.  Also, it may well be a requirement set by the customer that their suppliers be ISO9001 certified.

For ISO14001, it is to manage and minimize environmental risk, that can be very costly.  Gradually, customers also start to include this as their requirement.

Both system may also offer improvement opportunities such as better methods and more efficient resource utilization.
