The purpose is to win the best deal for yourself or on behalf of whomever you are negotiating. But you will prove your negotiation skills by understanding that the best result comes from both parties achieving a positive result. Focus on position based bargaining generally won't get you there, but determining each party's underlying interests will drive you to the win win scenario.
