it depends on two reasons.
the first reason is the type signals carried on the cable which should be considered on the designing phase which you could conquer using suitable transmitting technology, amplifications.
The second one is the environmental conditions such as electrical fields near cables which causes distortion and adding more noise to the original signal, and you could avoid it in designing/planing phase to choose the different paths away from other equipment and cables and use good quality and better shielded cables.
