ISO50001 provides guidelines for the efficient and cost effective use of energy resources while the ISO9001 is related to quality management and ISO14000 for preservation of environments. Where as these three standards provide guidelines in their specific area as an individual system, in totality they are interlinked  and supplement each other by reducing wastes (extra costs are reduced by saving energy utilization), preserving environments (Reduced energy requirements help preserving natural environments, such as coal, wood, oil, etc.) and reducing the cost of products and services, thus meeting overall objectives of organizations.

ISO 50001, the energy management standard, primarily puts an accent on an organization’s possibilities to manage their energy sources and energy use. ISO 14001 is the environmental management system standard, focusing on the environmental hazards the organization can affect. Ss, ISO 14001 inevitably covers the energy topics, but does not deal with specifications for an energy management system like ISO 50001 does. ISO 9001 is the quality management standard handling the customer(s) and the needs of the customer.

Together, the three management systems enable an organization to manage their overall business with better planning.

This depends upon how effective is your current system with respect to Energy Management.

Most of the organization have little focus on Energy Management and ignore activities like Energy Planning, energy related training and awareness, Energy Audits, and review of system with respect to Energy Management. These organizations have reported as much as 50% saving on energy cost by fully implementing ISO 50001 standard.
