Marketing managers don't usually get involved in production or distribution decisions?

Generally they don't. But I feel they should get involved to some extent if not fully.

Production & distribution can be managed effectively & efficiently based on the feed back from the customer / enduser which comes from the Marketing Managers.

To concentrate the Market and Customers, It require sufficient time that too  convenient to the  Customer.  It would be better to limit the involvement in production and distribution by proper communication of the market requirements to schedule the production and distribution by appropriate  delegation of authority in the right persons,  unless under specific emergencies.

My View  : Should Not - Its not there job responsibility or duty . If one does his/her duties & responsibilities properly by the end of the day thts enough .
