... all I know is that every franchise has individual store owners ... the franchise provides the building details ... suppliers (since purchases in bulk are cheaper)... the menu ... operating hours ... specials , advertisement (marketing), set pricing... but who opened it I do not know

One big difference is if a business like Barns & Noble which has a Starbucks in its chain does not except the Starbucks card or has a limitation on its menu, than it is not a true franchise from Starbucks, but operates under a limited license ... purchasing their cups or coffee, utilizing the band name ... even pricing can be different...

I do not think you can see it it at first ... only notice it when you are in the store and do not receive the same service
