After holding both positions, I would say that to be a Business  Development Manager you need to be a good Project Manager first, this gives you the necessary skills and understanding in-order to fully deliver the role of a BDM successfully.

Also a good understanding and knowledge of the related business / industry your working in .

On a personal note, the PM roles is more enjoyable, as I get that sense of achievement, when a project ends, and you have delivered all that's on the project brief.
