Do you mean informal in dress code or in procedures and practices.

I. Believe  structure is important and I believe dress code is also important,I believe the Google experience succeeds in companies that are competing in Blue Ocean Strategy where you have a product needed by most people and currently not offered by others.

In most companies we have worked for where Red Ocean Strategy prevails I believe formal structures are important for the optimization of output as we are competing in every aspect of business and how we carry ourselves and promote our image over other competetors is important.

Google make us actively involve in various activities as a matter of self interest without formally directing what we have to do.

In the same way an informal work environment can also make the employee to engage actively in the attainment of goals set by the org by collective contributions and all that is possible how well the organization exerts their desire, skill and motivated efforts make them to fulfill their tasks with increased output with less corrections, create co-operative work environment, less migration from work and abstention with a sustained prolonged employment cycle.

It depends on the sector of the business. Finance oriented company can only work in a formal way. Here documentation proof and procedure is a must.

Google is a Tech based entity, IT professionals need a creative environment than a strict and process oriented work schedule.

This will depend upon:

  1. Type of industry - some jobs have to be done in a fixed and formal way and need the person to be working in a defined workspace.
  2. Level of competence - the person working at the required level needs to meet certain competency levels, e.g. able to meet or surpass output with minimum or no supervision.
  3. Most important is commitment - the ability of the individual to do his job right and with body, mind, and soul dedicated to this effort.

I think, productivity can be excelled when information can be organized and effectively put to use. An informal environment might seem deceptive, but is pretty informative and interesting. I believe the better we understand our colleagues the simpler its gets to work towards selective goals.

It's not a common rule ! But may be  in certain conditions !

As it offers more working flexibility  would probably yields to better productivity

if the concerned are sincerely  engaged.

Informal teams are generally formed for social purposes. They can help to facilitate employee pursuits of common concerns, such as improving work conditions. More frequently however, these teams form out of a set of common concerns and interests, which may or may not be the same as the organization's. Leaders of these teams generally emerge from the membership and are not appointed by anyone in the organization.
