It depends on the SIM & Mobile phone you are using. Normally all the SIM cards are both UMTS & GSM enabled. So no need to bother about it too much. Then you should check whether your mobile is UMTS/3G capable. If it's3G capable then go to Settings -> Network Settings -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode / Preferred Network. Depends on the phone model these paths may vary.
