It is using the brand image of an existing product to promote another product.
Duplicating brand image = Enhance brand image
Sometimes duplication refers to brand corruption and stealing !
The impression in the consumers' mind of a brand's total personality (real and imaginary qualities and shortcomings). Brand image is developed over time through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme, and is authenticated through the consumers' direct experience.
Taking benefit from the previous product's brand image for promoting the new or any other product
There might be two prospective of it. If a parent company duplicate the brand image then its always beneficial because you sail on the brand image you already have in the market, but i believe even the rivalry company can use your brand image with a little change in spelling but same pronunciation will get you worry. For example if some one duplicate Vaseline brand with Vaslene, the the parent company may loss lots of business as there is change in spelling of the product only.
The most obvious benefit is that duplicating the images associated with one brand is difficult, expensive, and of questionable competitive value.
