Aside from the great answer given, employee orientation is like an ice breaker. It's a tour of your job, your functions, what is expected, policies, rules at workplace, and most of all you meet all the managers and in some cases meet CEO to congratulate your arrival, and welcome you to the organization.

Its the new model to make employees feel valued. It offers them a rounded view of the business.
My view is that it should be carried out6-10 months into the employment and not from the start as everything is new and limited information is taken in when you first start new role.
A new joiner is like an alien in new country, it is the duty of citizens to guide him and welcome him so that he would be familiar with new country. Similarly, orientation plan helps new employee to get familiar with key individual in organization. It also helps him to get familiarity with work flow process and procedure and this would helps in designing and execution of his task. Being performance management i used to compiled various orientation plans of each position and its duration ranges from one week to one year depending on nature of candidate.
