WDM basically mean wavelength division multiplexing, it describes way by which different wavelengths are multiplex and convey for a very long distance through Optical fiber cable. We have Dense WDM (DWDM) and Coarse WDM (CWDM) and the different between the two is the distance between multiplex wavelengths. Basically WDM is use at backbone layer of telecommunication system to convey high capacity traffic across a long distance.

Hi Rana! WDM stands for Wavelength Division Multiplexing.
Basically, The reason to use this multiplexing device is the efficiently utilization of optical fiber resources both at short and long distances.
Due to high demand of transmission capacity service providers often cope with extreme fiber usage and exhaust across significant proportions of their network.
An enormous amount of bandwidth capacity is needed to provide such services required by the customer.
The telecommunication industry so far has met their needs by using this WDM technology.
Hope you get your answer.
