This is about dilemma, when you are faced with some difficult decision and you don't know which way to go, left or right.
Both sides has a value, but you can not have both at the same time, you must to choose.
For example:1.
You want to have a job from your dreams in other country far and for a period of time, but you will not see your family and friends.
You will be happy with work, but you will have home illness.
To risk and enjoy or to stay home?2.
One man who is your friend and he is successful good person, ask you to be his wife.
But you love other man who is not sure about marriage.
And you want to have your family...3.
You need to fired somebody from the firm, you must choose between your friend who is not good worker but she is trying, or total stranger who is working nice and has excellent ideas.
If you fired your friend maybe you will lost this person forever, but if you fired other person, what you will say to your General Manager?

It means hypocracy evident in the policies of the present political system in the world or in every day to day life to have hegemony over the other for their own political interest by supressing the weak with the unmatched weapons of inferiority vs superiority.

Quality & Safety are two sides of the same coin? Love and Hate: Two Sides of the Same Coin? Hope and fear are two sides of the same coin? Computer and Digital photography....????????? These examples how can they be Same coin.
Love and Hate, what is the coin?Feelings?Human race??? This expression isn't at all just indicating : Love / hate, Religious/pagan....what is the coin in this???Existence? Examine the sentence and its meaning my friends, the coin is the unique thing in common to Result A, Result B...to Face A and Face B.
This expression is linked to Results,Consequences in a determined action or time period...for example, you have a new job...it can go well,or you can get fired, being in that job has its own consequences it has2 faces on same coin(the job)! You are in a difficult task....it hurts(side A)...but it will make you stronger and wised!(side B)...my friend2 sides of the same coin! That 's the true meaning of this ancient sentence.
two side of the same coin means contradiction in a unique subject, it means that a subject can go cool or you can get a backfire.

Thank you Lubna for you valuable question and also thanks to Amrut for his great detailed answer .
I think also the idiom although simple and direct , there is slight shadow of philosophy in it .
I think the idiom implies in the cases where there are only two possible conditions the existence of one means the absence of the other there is nothing in between .
The coin when thrown up it is either picture or text when settles down, but when it is still moving in the air it's condition is a mixture of picture and text can't be considered in real world because it is still in the world of probability.
So the idiom must be used with much care for example can't be implied for colors like black and white because there are many degrees of gray color in between .
I hope have been able to give precise definition , Thank you Best regards

to put it into a simple answer "two sides of the same coin" means two different sides opposing each other..
In a project if you can gain some extra benefits by hiring new employees its the one side, on the other side you will have to manage more people and train them and bear some new admin costs which may be are not suitable yet.
so when ever you take strategic decisions or on lower level you should always look on the both sides and then decide which way to go after evaluating both by comparing its weight in comparison with other side.

It means a person, subject or idea can be viewed two different ways.
For example: cheap labour in third world countries attract big brands (companies) to move their manufacturing to those countries, creating more job opportunities, but at the same time there is violation of labour laws in those countries and labours work long hours on very little salaries, without any benefits from employers other than just salary.
