So long if your export of the primitives were in3d surfaces then it could be in three-dimensional inside3dsmax. I believe, you could export then import as .3ds file format too? Though you may encounter tri-polyon surfaces oppose to quads-surfaces. Try checking the export settings box1st.

Now a days many3d machines uses "dwg" format. Like I am also using3D Laser Engraving machine which need "dwg" to engrave3D in crystal. When we convert any model in dwg it still in3d and engrave also same.
