Its better than corporal punishment :)
I'm all for detention, its not fun watching your class mates go home and play outside while you're still at school. Does it teach a lesson or serve a purpose? Yes it does, the student gets to finish all their homework in detention. Get an idea of what teachers are really like after hours, some are really cool and will try to advise the kid on what to do, what not to do and so on. It is inconvenient when the school is not close and you have to stop what you're doing to pick up the child. However it still beats corporal punishment and it is less likely for child to do it again or get detention again. (unless he is a troublemaker who craves attention)
