It is a design problem, the cable size to any electrical load from a power supply source, depends on:

  1. type of Motor, single phase or, three phase

  2. linear distance of the motor from the source

  3. current drawn by the motor (Hp. of the Motor)

  4. percentage of voltage drop permitted by the Electric Code to the load (motor)

Cables are pathways for currents and pathways must be able to handle the traffic requirements and so cable must be able to support the max current drawn by the motor. But in case of motors or other inductie loads one has to take into account the starting current of the motor and the method employed to reducing that current because the motor staring current can be7 to8 times higher then the rated current so that must be taken in to account.

Cables are selected according to several terms single phase or three phase motor, the output power and also the size of the motor.
