The source rock is where oil is produced. It contains organic matters that are quickly covered by clays size sediments known as shale. When oil is "produced" in the source rock it moves to the reservoir  rock (Sandstone) where it is kept up to maturity. Cap rock is responsible for preventing oil to escape from the source rock. It is made of clays layers.
