  • ISO9001,4.1.f states "The organization shall implement actions necessary to achieve planned results." This is what Tim is referring. Look at ISO9000:2005 for more guidance. Section2.7.2 states the types of documents used in qm systems "documents that provide information about how to perform activities and processs consistently, such documents can include documented procedures, work instructions and drawings." The word "procedure" is not used and stated that it must be followed. "Drawing" is not used either. What if we said there were no requirements in the standard to follow a "drawing" and therefore the auditor could not require this? We'd be wrong! A drawing per ISO9000:2005 is a document that provices information about how to perform activities". (2.7.2) In ISO9000:2005,3.4.5, the definition of "procedure" is given as "specified way to carry out an activity or a process". Audit is defined in ISO9000:2005 as a systematic, independent and documented process for obtaining audit evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which audit criteria are fulfiled. Criteria is defined in ISO9000:2005 as set of polices, procedures or requirements. An auditor audits to the criteria. By definition they determine if the system is conforming to it's procedures.

First two steps:

1.  Clarify Vision, Mission and Values

Employees need to know how what they do is tied to organizational strategy and objectives which makes it important that all employees understand where the organization is headed (its vision), what it hopes to accomplish (mission) and the operational principles (values) that will steer its priorities and decision making.  Having a process to educate employees during new employee orientation and a communication process to help ensure that the mission, vision and values is always in front of the people is a major first step.

2.  Identify Critical Success Factors (CSF)

Critical success factors help an organization focus on those things that help it meet objectives and move a little closer to achieving its mission.  These performance based measures provide a gauge for determining how well the organization is meeting objectives.
