Not essential, depends upon individuals. Traits of leader vary from one type to other.
Yes, humility is one of the essential leadership traits. It helps leaders connect with people as they perceive them more approachable and down to earth.
Recent research suggests that humility is a quality of certain types of leaders. For example, Jim Collins and his colleagues found that a certain type of leader, whom they term "level5", possesses humility and fierce resolve.Humility is being studied as a trait that can enhance leadership effectiveness. The research suggests that humility is multi-dimensional and includes self-understanding and awareness, openness, and perspective taking.
Level5 Leadership: The Triumph of Humility and Fierce Resolve
“Level5” refers to the highest level in a hierarchy of executive capabilities that we identified during our research. Leaders at the other four levels in the hierarchy can produce high degrees of success but not enough to elevate companies from mediocrity to sustained excellence. And while Level5 leadership is not the only requirement for transforming a good company into a great one—other factors include getting the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off the bus) and creating a culture of discipline—our research shows it to be essential. Good-to-great transformations don’t happen without Level5 leaders at the helm. They just don’t.

I wouldn't call it humility but being as humble as you can.
Humility, undoubtedly is an essential virtue/skill in order to be a successful leader.A person who sustains humility will also posess sufficient patience and will be a good listener in order to understand the other person. This will also make the person well prepared in order to react to forthcoming situations like the same undergone.
I strongly believe humility is one of the essential traits of a good leader. Humble leaders are very transparent and open to admit their mistakes. They develop strong relationship with the team and focus on healthy discussions. Many leaders tend to focus on winning the arguments with their subordinates which will not give a good solution and hence have an adverse effect on organizational growth.
Example:
Every one of us knows that Steve Jobs was a great leader and an inspiration to young generation. Though he has revolutionized the mobile and music industry, there were other sides of Steve jobs as well. His relationship with his subordinates is not very great and people who had worked close to him know how dictating he was. He could have been even great if he was humble and much friendlier.
In the business context humility is not a sign of weak leadership but an act of humbleness to respect others or subordinates. A virtue that can help the leaders to gain trust from the team. Leaders whose management strategies like dynamic, participative, democratic, humility is the best to bind themselves upon achieving one goal, one direction and one dream for the future of organization. Thus, in my point of view its essential virtue for the success of the leader.
Yes of course. Part of being a leader is focusing on the path and the people following you on the path. A Leader's focus should be on creating leaders and having a vision and drawing the path for people to follow. If he focuses on himself and if pride knows its way to him then he will not be a leader.
Not required but some leaders had
