In America, distribution of flyers is prohibited and illegal in many cities.
They are considered worse case of junk mail.
Distribution of unsolicited flyers in homes, in person, in businesses, or tucked on the windshield of a car is considered rude, littering, unsolicited intrusion, and annoying practice.
Thus, they usually affect the businesses negatively.
Now this...
SMS marketing is worst than distributing flyers.
You don't have a choice of refusing the delivery of an unsolicited SMS.
Many times it is delivered in the vie hours of the night, or on times when you don't want to be bothered with anything.
It is intrusion in privacy, rude, annoying and shocking.
The life expectancy of a SMS is less than10 seconds, and people do not remember a SMS message10 minutes after reading it (if the read it).
No legitimate business will do such a thing to send people promotional SMS at a time when they are a sleep, with the family, during meals, discussing business matters, or enjoying with friends.
In my opinion, it is used to exploit vulnerable peoples' emotional needs, with a "quick fix your problem" type message.
And remember the human psychology.
It back fires! Thank You.

Hello Aylwin, SMS Marketing will be effective only if targeted, but not in bulk! Did you know that the effectiveness of Bulk E-mail and SMS marketing is only2-5% ! In case of E-mail marketing it is cheap so you've got nothing to lose, and the2-5% response rate will be satisfying for you, but in case of SMS marketing you will be throwing money on the floor! If an agency can guarantee that your mobile messages will go only to your targeted market, then I would recommend you to go with it, either you are starting a new business or promoting an existing one.
I would also strongly recommend that you include a voucher number or a special offer for the launch of your business.
Good Luck!

Yes, can be a piece in the big marketing plan.
Is short, and easy to understand.
Is read by everyone.
But you have to be careful and choose the right day and the right hour.

sms is a part from Direct Marketing , and direct Marketing is part from the Promotional mix to be frank with you, it depends on the culture, customer behavior and the industry if you chose SMS as your channel, it has a lot of benefits like: Marketing messages are addressed directly to customers.
Seeks to drive a specific "call to action.“ Direct marketing emphasizes trackable, measurable responses from customers — regardless of medium..
Compared to email marketing, SMS has a staggeringly high open rate.
Essentially, every SMS sent is opened (and read), whereas only a fraction of emails sent are read.
Spread your Brand Name from what i mentioned above you have to know your customer behavior to deliver your messages through the right channel

SMS marketing is a powerful tool, as it lands directly on to the customers cellphones.
But, SMS marketing only becomes fruitful if the messages are sent to the target market & target industry.
Thus, it depends on the type of business you are dealing with.
In SMS Marketing, the clicks are more when your target segments are right.
Example: if I am running a women retail outlet, I would market through SMS to the specific segments: women,30 -40 age etc.
Through right scheme of marketing, the right results are achieved.
The only flaws are, its an expensive route.
In the2013 era, I would opt for an "effective" email campaign, as70% consumers are using internet on their phones.
its cost effective and results are good.

If you'd have been more specific about the type of business you were talking about, i could have commented.
