You have given two conditions along with your question, however the change in the marketing industry, Cause Marketing is yet to become a mature piece of the marketing world because the majority of the firms are pro-profit bearing organizations. Cause Marketing can mostly work with a firm that operates in a humanitarian setup by creating awareness. However it is also a fact that major firms like P&G started tagging their products telling the consumers that with each sale P&G will donate1$ to a charity, or help eradicate food crisis, or that money goes to a charity foundation that works for humanitarian purposes. Cause marketing depending on the cause, can create an impact however it is also a conventional means but there is a hardliner, it does promote a brand and promotes brand awareness.
