Yes indeed, you are an excellent sales person, and I am proud to have you in my team. I know you deserve to be rewarded for your hard work and excellent results, but a promotion to supervisor is not always the best reward, not only for the company but it may affect you in a negative way. Trust me, when I see that it will be better for you, I won't hesitate to take this decision. But we can set a plan for how to do to make such a decision become in your advantage (training, personal development....)
As a manager you should take the following into consideration:
- You should be able to identify the qualities of your team and who has the qualities to supervise and lead others.
- A good performer doesn't a good manager. By taking such a decision, you may kill the excellent performance
- If you see it is better for the company and for the employee to promote him, work on the development of the skills needed for the new position
- In promotion issue, you, as a manager, should not take decisions on employee's directions. It is you who should identify the need and possibilities

in case of good boss such question would not happen
it looks like employee has not got feedback from the boss timely
also in such company should be performance evaluation system-each employee must know
where he is, what is expected from him, did he met expectation, what to be developed, and what is his carrier opportunity
It actually depends on the person. His/her selling performance has nothing to do with his/her ability to become a supervisor or lead a team.
So if the person has the abilities to lead a team, coordinate and manage people then I would tell him/her that he/she is on the right track and I would explain how and when that can happen.
If the person doesn't possess the needed abilities then I would explain that I see him/her more in advancing into another direction (e.g. becoming a senior salesman. expert, coach...) instead of becoming a supervisor.

Good morning. I first thank you for giving me opportunity to answer the question. In my opinion, if I will be at your place I would have seen from two points of view. Firstly, if after taking so much effort if my boss is not indented to give promotion to me, then their must not be a vacancy for that position currently. Secondly, either the time consumption for completion the task can be diminish efficiently or the way I had approach must have some different way too which is more efficient or I'm lacking somewhere, may be in managerial skills. There can be number of reasons. In such situation, I will discuss with my boss and try to find out what exactly hindering for my growth so I can improve myself. Sometimes it is not possible to give you promotion due to unavailability of position, in such case companies compensate by giving good increment. In the life, it make difference, how you look to situation? If you're so much capable then no one can stop your growth.

I'd congratulate you on the excellence performance, check your performance reviews by team members then suggest a more realistic promotion time frame.
Promotion is more about consistency and groupwork than just achieving individual sales targets.
