First, I need to make sure that I am sensitive to and aware of individual differences. This can be a challenge when people with diverse languages and cultural backgrounds are required to work together, so getting to know people should be something that is consciously and deliberately done. Then, it is important to let people enjoy each others' differences. That's what makes for a cohesive team that works together in sync, where everyone has a sense of real belonging. I like to think of an efficient team as a car engine with all the pistons timed to fire smoothly. (You can just hear the soft purr.)
Mananagent of diversity in the21st century is a reality since sovereign states and homogenous cultures hardly exist in most companies. There are a few issues that must be taken seriously when managing diversity. Firstly, the need to focus on the collective goal is of paramount importance to any organisation. Despite the diversity, it is important for colleagues to focus on the collective good that is the mission and the vision of the organisation thus ensuring the outcomes are met. However, the complexity of cultures and individual personalities will always be a challenge. This should not be underestimated and it is a management imperative that a good understanding of personalities and cultures exists amongst managment. In other words a manager must understand the people he or she works with. Irrespective of cultural differences there are individual differences. It is important to understand these differences with a view to reaching the outcomes of the organisation. Managers play a very important role in advancing the goals of an organisation. It is important not to have any malice and ensure that the ego of the manager does not sabotage the outcomes of an organisation. Besides understanding the cultures and personalities a manager has to understand him or herself.
