The microsoft step by step book. It has all of the microsoft applications with details on how to use the applications based on what you are trying to do. Word has a step by step process that shows you how to create a document, same with excel and how to create a workbook using the functions, access and data-mining, setting up access and commanding it to do what you want and etc.
I agree practice makes perfect, but sometimes you have to read into these things for shortcuts and other functions you may not be able to do on your own.
The best thing about computer books are the book covers, the rest is generally a waste of time. Many books end up on bookshelves catching dust and never to be see again.
Practice, practice and more practice is the key.
Attend classes, get questions answered and follow up what you have learnt away from the class. Learn at your own pace.
The good thing about computer learning is that you can always correct errors and from them you learn something new too. There no failing, just different ways of navigating menus and shortcuts and producing work in a quick and timely way.

a series called BIBLE, they are available for all software programs related to any field, yet they are the best series i've come to so far.
