Word has a step by step process that shows you how to create a document, same with excel and how to create a workbook using the functions, access and data-mining, setting up access and commanding it to do what you want and etc.
I agree practice makes perfect, but sometimes you have to read into these things for shortcuts and other functions you may not be able to do on your own.
The best thing about computer books are the book covers, the rest is generally a waste of time. Many books end up on bookshelves catching dust and never to be see again.
