Nice one, I'd like to hear the answers to this questions!

From my point of view, any (and not just HR) consultant:

  • must be well grounded in his area of consultancy, which means he has to be an expert and understand not only the theory, but also the practice and how that fits in the real environment. Many consultants are very good at theory but have never seen a live system work and operate in practice
  • must be customer oriented and approachable
  • must be results oriented
  • must know how his advices will bring results to the company he consults
  • must produce his own content, and not just reproduce something created by someone else
  • must have sense for the big picture
  • must be good at networking, communicating and presenting

There might be some other things, but I think this can sum up the most important ones
