Discipline is sometimes used very loosely without taking into consideration the fact that children and humans in general are holistic beings.  There are many facets to people that warrant consideration when the issue of discipline surface.  The big question is why are some people very well behaved and others are on the opposite side of the spectrum.  It is important to understand that people who misbehave are socialised into life in a particular way.  It is only the alienated and marginalised children who often behaving in a way that reflects that all is not well.  As leaders in education we need to TRY and understand why people are not behaving well.  What has happened or what is happening in their lives that creates this kind of response that is not acceptable in schools.  A school is a very important place and it can nurture a child or destroy a child.  It is a critical period for intervention in the life of a child.  Caring adults who take a personal interest in the lives of children is what is required.  Once we attempt to understand what the problem is then only can we have an appropriate response.  Unless this study and understanding is not arrived at one cannot speak of discipline.  There is always something that goes wrong in the life of a child that causes this behaviour.  That must be understood first.  Education, teaching and learning is not about transmitting information into the head of a child, it is about the development of an individual in particular contexts that all warrant good and sound understanding of the learner, context and the personal dynamics in the life of a child
