Automation in Photoshop is very useful in doing repetitive task. For example, you have50 images and just want to resize it the same as the others with only few clicks. You can accomplish all the tasks with opening/saving all50 images in a much much fewer steps. In lieu to that, Action tool can also be very helpful. You can ask me if you want to know more about using actions and automation.

Yes and its crazy cool and gives you more time to do other task. Especially if you had sequence of images to be treated with specific eftect and need to put back together to be a video scene
