my choice will be several smaller piles with the same load capacity because it will produce more friction resistant which mean more factor of safety also it is more common and more easy for implementation
The choice of a large diameter pile suffers from the disadvantage that serious consequences would occur in case there is setting out error of the pile.
Moreover, in terms of cost consideration, for the same load capacity the cost of a group of small diameter piles is generally lower than that of a large diameter pile.
On the other hand, for small diameter piles i.e. mini-piles, they are advantageous in site locations with limited headroom and space.
In addition, in some structures with only a few piles, it is uneconomic because of its high mobilization cost.
Many time you will not be have much choices, But:
- The choice will be depend to the soil investigation report.
- The design and the re-design of the structure and the structure purpose will affect after comparing that with the economic factors and the budget.
- The risk of the the failure of one or more than one pile after casting if you chose a large diameter and less numbers while you have very small choices for rectifications.
- Also using more piles with different pile Dia size will be difficult for the piles sub-contractors and the cost will be higher.
- Large Dia and less number will be good for saving project time but with expectation of more cost but it may not be too much to affect the project cost.
System of several smaller piles with the same load capacity will be many time strengthen then large diameter piles.
