Sales person should do this in a sequence.For understanding the requirement of the client, effective listening is must. Once the requirement is clear and it is known that sales person would be able to deliver it, on that note a healthy and smart talking should begin to gain the trust of the client in order for the sales person to initiate a business with them. For existing clients, both listening and talking should go parallel

According to me the key skill is Listening which will give you the idea about needs and wants of customer and sales person can match their product/services/idea accordingly and close the sale positively.
I believe Listening Skill is very much important for everybody in day to day life as well.
Both skills are important because when you cannot listen to your customers you will never satisfied them. Like if you are a sale person and selling something in a country where different cast and country people are shopping. Then you have to very clearly listen because every person have different pronunciation of a word and different attitude. So you have to be very care full by dealing with them by using great customer care.
