The edge strip can be corrugated/ rough than the traffic lanes so as to alert the traffic going off road.

Option "a" - rougher than the traffic lanes. Possibly because to alert any drivers that have accidentally strayed off the road and are heading for the edge and to provide additional traction for skidding vehicles to recover, and to collect water that has runoff from the road.
