A truck company promotes the fact it is using fuel in its trucks derived from agricultural crops, rather than fossil fuels. This is evidence that:

a) Using sustainable resources will always give a company a sustainable competitive advantage.

b) It can be very difficult to understand impacts of decisions to adopt apparently environmentally friendly practices. c) There are always benefits to a company deriving from being the first to adopt new sustainable options. d) Environmental sustainability is always associated with significant Public Relations benefits to a company.

It will remain difficult to evaluate the impact of environmentally friendly practices on the bottom line of the company till the market will embrace the need for such practices. Inexplicably there is still a disconnect between the regulatory framework (that require compliance to environmental standards), the market (or the "victims" of the environmental degradations) and the differentiation between environmentally friendly companies and not. Neither the regulators  nor the market has yet devised a methodology for rewarding the compliance and penalizing the non compliance.

Some countries have tax relief programs for environmentally compliant companies, however in times of market globalization still these incentives are not sufficient to offset the cost disadvantage that compliance brings, the market is not doing its part in the game.

This is happening in the organic food area, the market is slowly playing a role in demanding more and more organic food, however in other areas the market does not feel the immediate impact of privileging environmentally friendly companies products and services, this is due to some basic lack of sensibility to the problem. WTO  does not help as well, too many economic  interests subjugate the environmental issues to a mere PR propaganda.

We need a plain level game internationally and an aggressive information campaign to the public. The market has to start playing a role in the triangle and it will be the most powerful role.
