The purpose for writing a critique is to evaluate somebody's work (a book, an essay, a movie, a painting...) in order to increase the reader's understanding of it. A critical analysis is subjective writing because it expresses the writer's opinion or evaluation of a text. Analysis means to break down and study the parts. Writing a critical paper requires two steps: critical reading and critical writing.

Essay titles often contain the instruction critically analyse, yet a common complaint from tutors is that students do not analyse, but simply describe, with resulting low marks. If you are asked to critically analyse something, it means that you must consider and evaluate the claims made by the theorists, “experts”, official bodies, journalists etc that you have read, asking yourself if the basis of these claims is sound and whether they apply or are relevant to the situation you are examining. It is not enough, however, to simply include references to other writers and summaries of their criticisms; you must do this, but if this is all you do, then you are still being descriptive. It is you who must be critical, basing your judgement , for example, on experience gained in the field or on work placement, on your own knowledge and observations, and on a balanced reading and overview of what other people have written. Always do your reading and research in a critical manner; don’t take everything at face value, and don’t always believe everything you read.
