My advice which give to someone just starting their career in HR and looking to make a different is : Commitment at the career development of the crew is on a distinguished road
Have passion to learn, work and apply.... Do not stop improving your knowledge and skill
you said looking to make different ? for that Ishall say in addition to all what they said : listen more than u talk , and learn the jobs and evalution styles , because it is important for the one who want to make a change to know at first what he does and what he want to do? and how can he do it ?. and the abblities of is work-force ! can they do it
Should bear the pressure of work and have a high skill in effective communication to know the value of time for him

Simply, try to ever be creative and initiator; more business solutions will be possible for such persons.
Any one wants to start in HR career ,the advices will be:
1. Patient
2. Thinking a head and know the impact of problems
3. Good relatioship with employees
4. Accurate and good quality of work
5. Keep the information very Confident
6. Comply to apply policies and procedure
7. Transperant with his direct manager regarding employees issue
Anybody can get a job and do just the work requirements.... but real passion for the job / human resources management is required to provide exceptional client service.

Have PASSION and having Practical solution for employers based on theories and contemporary practices!
Follow your heart. Do not go by the words of the supervisor when he wants to sack an emploee. Speak with him. If he does not have integrity and behavioral issue try to put him somewhere else in the organisation. Some one else may think he is a good resource.
They must be a peoples person and willing to cooperate and lead, as well as advice them to motivate them.
