In General Microsoft Office programs as a whole became essential for managers and other positions.
It is needed to make clear reports and studies and for other goals that already have been explained in the previous ansewrs here.
But as Mr.
Anas said, there are more professional programs that you can depend on to get the same results.

In addition to all the below (that Excel and other applications are essential to do business) lets not forget that Managers should lead by example...So i could not imagine that any Manager should know any less from any person that he leads,

excel is a very handy and useful tool in a warehouse as it is easy to use and user friendly, it doesn't need a lot of training to be able to handle this software.
built in equations are of a great help to manage statistics and generating spread sheets.
a warehouse manager must be computer literate and generally familiar with applications that facilitate work flow .

I think good knowledge of Excel is quite an essential requirement for a position largely depending on numbers, charts and reports.
A functional knowledge of Excel macros and formulas is much more desirable, though.

I'dd like to apologize to you as I did not work as distribution manager before, but usually, MS Office programs became an essential tools for managers in general.
Excel and access are useful to managers for some statistics and reports they would like to compose.
But there are some programs that are more critical to distribution manager business, like ERP, SAP, and some of them contains the ability to make some reports and studies.
In general, yes: MS office programs like excel are useful, but I suggest that you go to more professional programs, especially designed for distribution.
after you test them, you can fill the gab of some missing ideas in those programs with your own equations in Excel files.

I think the proficiency level for Excel is of paramount imporatance for any professional in the field of SCM. It's not only convenient but simple & handy for any calculations or elsewise. It's quick & fast for preparing any reports, charts, graphical representation or even diagrams. So to me i think one should have if not thorough  but good knowledge regarding Excel.
