Agree with Mr Abdou, that "waste" should be linked to value add in the customer's point of view; instead of to "necessity" -which is in the producer's opinion.
A wasted resource is one that is spent without adding any value to the final product. For example, inventory is necessary in warehouse operation's point of view, but it is a waste in Lean manufacturing.
