A SPT is used to determine the bearing capacity of the soil. You hammer in a cone with a certain width and with a certain force and measure how many blows are needed to pass15 cm. That gives you a good idea what the soil can hold

i agree with wolf klaas 

SPT  test  the most commonly used in -site test  in a bore hole   , the test is made by making use of a

split spoon sampler it is tests of soil exploration.
