- As its name says, "coding" consists of read through codes and then, the information is translated linguistically, through a computer peripheral.

At the manufacturer end it will be both printing them and reading them to track receipts and dispatches.

Further down the supply chain during shipment or at the distributor/retailer end it will be more of reading them and transferring the data to the inventory/MIS system.

Some multi-brand Distribution Centers / retailers may print their own barcodes to facilitate easier tracking
