If you say device for duct then i will say Sound liner which is installed inside the duct to reduce the sound of air inside the duct. Sound attenuators can be used when we have big fans or exhaust like generator. To minimize the open sound within that area and to reduce noise pressure sound attenuators are used.

Hope this will work.

In HVAC systems, the sound attenuator is best and has given good results. In a mechanical ventilation ventilation systems, once I built a separate soundproof partition around the exhaust blower by glas wool. That was reduce the internal sound level of the room about80%. But, that was transfer to the external environment. So, for applications like this it is always better to use silencers with internal baffles or attenuations.

I suppose you mean sound attenuator as you said device
