1) A number of criteria exists to select pump:
- for what task (supply, dewatering, drainage),
- for which kind of liquid,
- for distance and height to pumping, etc.
There are methods to select pump for each of the subjects. Generally, the following criteria may be used:
- Capacity
- Head (Pressure)
- Solid Particle Size
- Pump Performance Curve, its operating point on the curve. Do not forget that each pump is able to provide certain capacity at certain head, which the head is a sum of height of pumping and losses of head, plus some spare head.
2) To calculate the demanded pump capacity, you should take into account properties of the pumped liquid (e.g. water. fuel and slurry are rather different); distance and height to pumping and material of pipeline, to calculate loss of head.
3) Availability of power supply.
4) Availability of pumps owned by the Company you do it for.
5) Finance matters, e.g. funds for buying new pumps, and presence of pumps in market.
