About Trunk Port :

Trunk Ports (carrying multiple VLANs, with tagged traffic) are usually found used as inter-switch links (pass VLAN information between switches) and By default, a trunk interface can carry traffic for all VLANs.

A trunk port is a port that is assigned to carry traffic for all the VLANs that are accessible by a specific switch, a process known as trunking. Trunk ports mark frames with unique identifying tags – either802.1Q tags or Interswitch Link (ISL) tags – as they move between switches. Therefore, every single frame can be directed to its designated VLAN. An Ethernet interface can either function as a trunk port or as an access port, but not both at the same time. A trunk port is capable of having more than one VLAN set up on the interface. As a result, it is able to carry traffic for numerous VLANs at the same time.

The term trunk port varies actually betwen manufacturers. In Cisco it is used on ports that have more than one vlan, tagged and untagged of course.

In HP/3COM for example it is used to denote aggregating the link of more than one port and joing their total throuput as if four ports work together so if one port is1Gs/s then four ports (with four cables of course) will be4Gb/s.

In Cisco this is called link agregation.

Trunk port  refers to the use of multiple network connections in parallel to increase the link speed beyond the limits of any one single cable or port. This is called link aggregation. These aggregated links may be used to interconnect switches or to connect high-capacity servers to a network.

Two types of ports in switches:trunk and access.By default it will be access port.Trunk port enables us to communicate between same vlans in connected switches via it.

An Ethernet interface can either function as a trunk port or an access port. Trunk port is configured for carry traffic for the vlans configured and separated across multiple switches.

Simply, a port that is configured as a trunk, accepts traffic from all VLANs on the network, unlike access ports that are configured to access one VLAN on the network.

Manageable switches are these switches that accepts advanced configurations like VLANs, STP,...

unlike small switches (Unmanageable) like Linksys,
