A mass (air) flow sensor (MAF) is used to find out the mass flow rate of air entering a fuel-injected internal combustion engine. The air mass information is necessary for the Engine Control Unite (ECU) to balance and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine.

If you don't replace it and continue to drive the car you are risking damage to your catalytic converter, oxygen sensors and possibly engine failure if the engine is running lean. More than likely the engine will run rich with a bad MAF.
