Every browser has its own libraries , like any other program [e.g office word] it has a libraries of codes to work good , when a new version appear a new library appear , so old browsers versions has old libraries , consider that you are html5 developer what will you do , you are putting a new codes or new elements codes , those codes of course are not defined because the old browser creator or developer can't read the future [ i.e the new html5 element codes ] , so what will you do as website developer , would you reinvent the old browsers like IE6 , or would you try to find cross idea to handle this problem ? , so you will use something called shiv , what is shiv ? shiv is a JavaScript new codes file that can define new element like header , footer , article , aside , ..etc

like cross platform used to work at any operating system [e.g java cross platform programs ] , shiv will work as cross browsers library, to complete the missing codes at any browser

HTML5 Shiv

Perhaps the most popular shiv, and one you may have likely used already, is the HTML5 Shiv. The HTML5 Shiv was created by Remy Sharp to provide the ability to use HTML5 elements within versions of Internet Explorer8 and below. The HTML5 Shiv not only creates support for HTML5 elements but also allows them to be properly styled with CSS.

we all make cross codes without knowledge, like when we make class .header and class .footer etc with html4 or like what bootstrap developers do [look at bootstrap CSS codes file you will see a lot of class like .table , they are reinvent table properties with new values as they like ]

There are a lot of things other than shiv here are some article sample , Preparing Your Website for Internet Explorer8 (IE8)

Note

WordPress [ CMS ] developers made there own shiv
