The Lost of mud into the formation is as a result of the mud circulation pressure being greater than the fracture gradient, it is therefore important for mud engineers to ascertain the fracture gradient pressure at every depth so as to successfully drill to pay zone.

But note, when the mud pressure is less than the fracture gradient,  it's could result to collapse or even the invasion of formation fluid into d wellbore which could lead to a kick, and of course,  when a kick is not properly managed, it's results to a blow out!

I hope this was helpful.
