Firstly train and guide them towards a universally accepted methodology such as Harvard, Cambridge, etc. - i.e. instruct them how to use these methods effectively and efficiently. In addition they should learn interview skills and be made aware of the integrity that goes along with it.
You can also dedicate teaching time towards a 'library hour' to enhance their skills - this can be a practical session, either with real books or on line journals, etc. Also ensure that they learn 'search' skills for on line research so that they access the correct sites and not deviate or procrastinate - the internet can be very time consuming
Then most importantly - instil a love for reading in your learners
